Advisory

Is Copper the new gold? Theft of copper plumbing and wiring are on the rise.

You may have heard of recent thefts that involve the taking of copper pipes and wiring, primarily from air conditioning units on rooftops. There has been a recent increase in the theft of copper pipes and wiring from residences, plumber trucks and suppliers. Although, not nearly valuable as gold, this crime does result in a significant monetary loss for the victim in the repair and replacement costs.

While it is difficult to completely secure air conditioner units, Topanga Area recommends you make it difficult for anyone to access your air conditioner units by removing ladders, dumpsters, or other objects that may allow a thief to gain access to your roof or other areas where your air conditioner unit is located. Some homeowners and business owners have enclosed their air conditioning units with steel cages. This may be a costly investment, but the alternative could prove to be more costly.

Thieves are also targeting abandoned, foreclosed or vacant homes. If you live near an abandoned or foreclosed home, take note of anyone entering the residence, especially during odd hours. Call 9-1-1 if you believe a theft is about to occur, is occurring or has occurred. Get a good description of any suspect(s) or car(s).
