Avoid the 13 - Don’t Drink and Drive This Labor Day Weekend.

The Mountain View Police Department, along with other cities within Santa Clara County, will be participating in the "Avoid the 13" campaign this Labor Day holiday.  The campaign which officially kicked off last Friday and will last for 18 days will provide a period of heightened DUI enforcement.  Residents can expect extra patrols from officers focused on DUI enforcement, as well as all regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers to focus additional efforts at stopping and arresting DUI drivers during their normal shifts.  Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

According to national advocacy group Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, fatal drunken driving crashes in the country peak from 28 each day to 42 in the days leading up to and including the Labor Day weekend.  Residents who are driving and witness a driver who is displaying signs of alcohol intoxication are encouraged report the drivers by calling 9-1-1.
