Lt. Mike Loarie Graduates from LAPD Westpoint Leadership Program
In 1992, Los Angeles Police Department Commissioner Jesse A. Brewer, a Colonel in the US Army Reserve, felt some of the most effective leadership training was being held at the Military Academy at West Point. He coordinated with West Point to develop quality leadership training for the LAPD.
In 1994, five members of LAPD participated in a program hosted by West Point faculty - officially known as the West Point Leadership and Command Program.
In 1996, LAPD trained 30 employees assigned to various supervisory and executive positions to be LAPD West Point Leadership Program instructors. The program is a 136 hour, four- week course, approved by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. The program is also accredited with Woodbury University for Master’s degree credits.
The principal aim of the LAPD West Point Leadership Program is to teach individuals how to think more systematically about leadership, challenges, and situations. The course teaches 27 behavioral science and adult education theories compiled from top universities in the nation- with heavy emphasis and influence from the US Military Academy at West Point. The course requires students to solve realistic law enforcement leadership problems using these theories during three different exam settings.
Escondido Police Department Lieutenant Michael Loarie attended the most recent LAPD West Point Leadership Program and graduated on June 19th, 2012. He was among 21 other class members from several agencies across California.
Lt. Loarie described his experience as, “The program has already had an impact on how I think and act at work. LAPD West Point Leadership Program helped me take what I learned in the classroom each week I was gone and put it to use the next week I came back to EPD. The work was relevant, timely, and meaningful. I left the program with 21 new friends in law enforcement that I hope to stay connected with for the rest of my career.”
Lt. Loarie is a 23 year veteran of EPD. He started his career as a Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff for two years before transferring to EPD.
Lt. Loarie has a Bachelor of Science degree from Azusa Pacific University in Organizational Leadership and an Master of Science degree from the University of San Diego in Executive Leadership.
