On Tuesday (August 14th) at 5:11 pm the Folsom Police received a report of a robbery that had just occurred at the Wells Fargo Bank, 1113 East Bidwell Street in Folsom. During a search of the area, officers encountered the suspect a few blocks away walking in a residential neighborhood with a large backpack. When they tried to contact the man, he dropped a backpack and ran.
The foot pursuit of the suspect crossed through back yards and across the roof top of a nearby business. The officers’ radio traffic attracted the attention of police officers from the Sacramento Police Department and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department who happened to be in the area.
The suspect eventually fled through the front door of a home in the 1300 block of School Street occupied by four young children and their parents. The mother and children’s screams caught the attention of two officers; a Folsom Police Department officer with 18 years experience and a Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy with 24 years experience. As the officers ran towards the front door of the house, the suspect exited, saw the officers, and returned towards the screaming family. The suspect was trying to get into a locked bedroom where the family had fled when the two officers engaged him in the hallway. As the suspect turned to flee into another bedroom, the Sheriff’s deputy shot the suspect once in the back.
Despite the efforts of the police and fire department personnel, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the family members were injured, but a Sacramento Police officer suffered a leg injury unrelated to the apprehension of the suspect. The identity of the suspect is pending confirmation by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
