Update on Hughson Incident
Hughson, CA- Sheriff’s Detectives continue to investigate the shooting incident that occurred in the 1800 block of 7th Street in Hughson yesterday. The suspect has been identified as Szuggar (04/03/60) of Hughson and the victim has been identified as Nick Kounias (03/31/67) of Hughson. Both men were found deceased inside of the home.
Detectives state that Kounias lived at the house on 7th Street and Szuggar use to be his neighbor. While they were neighbors, both men had an ongoing neighbor feud.
Detectives stated that after the pursuit, Szuggar ran into Kounias’s home and both men had an exchange of gunfire. Detectives believe that Kounias may have been acting in self-defense. Detectives are calling these findings preliminary as they have sent evidence to Department of Justice lab for testing. Detectives are still investigating to determine why Szuggar ended the pursuit at Kounias’s home.
The incident started just before 1:30 PM on Wednesday July 25, 2012, when Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Deputies were responded to the area of Eaton Road for a report of a male subject, later identified as Szuggar, who was armed with a handgun and was threatening suicide. As deputies were responding, the reporting person stated Szuggar left the Eaton Road and was headed to an unknown location. Deputies still responded to the area to attempt to locate the Szuggar.
A Deputy spotted a vehicle that matched the description of what Szuggar was driving. The Deputy started following the vehicle and waited for back-up units. Once back-up units arrived from the Sheriff’s Department and the Highway Patrol, Deputies attempted to make a car stop to check on the Szuggar’s welfare. Szuggar failed to stop and continued driving southbound on Geer Road. He then turned Westbound on E Hatch Road and then Southbound 7th Street into the City of Hughson. Szuggar then pulled into the driveway of a home in the 1800 block of 7th Street, exited the vehicle and ran inside of a home.
As deputies arrived and started surrounding the home Szuggar ran into, they heard several gunshots from inside the home. An adult female ran out of the home and told deputies outside that other people were still inside the house.
The Sheriff’s Department SWAT Team was activated and responded to the scene. Once the SWAT Team arrived, they made entry into the home Szuggar was last seen going into. Once inside, the team located two adult males, Szuggar and Kounias dead inside and both appeared to have gunshot injuries. Nobody else inside the home and no officers or deputies were injured during the incident.
