SMPD to Provide Increased Police Presence in the Downtown Theater Area

Our City Leaders and staff are deeply saddened by the tragic events that killed and injured innocent moviegoers in Aurora Colorado. Our thoughts and heartfelt wishes go out to the families and community in Aurora. We will be lowering all flags at city facilities to half mast in recognition of the tragedy, and have taken additional proactive measures to reassure our community and increase security in our downtown cinema area. In response to this incident, we are implementing additional proactive measures to reassure our community and increase security in our downtown cinema area.

SMPD officials have met with our local Cinema management team to review safety procedures and increase security awareness for this weekend. We have no reason to believe that this is other than an isolated incident. However, in an abundance of caution, we will be increasing our community police officers in the downtown cinema area over the weekend to provide a reassuring presence in order to quell concerns, and ensure there are no incidents in reaction to this event.

While we have no reason to believe the incident in Aurora to be other than an isolated and tragic event, our goal over this weekend is to ensure that our community feels safe and secure as they live, work, and play in San Mateo. To that end, you are our partners in safety - our “extra eyes and ears”!

Please call SMPD if you see a crime or suspicious activity via 911 or our non-emergency line 650-522-7700.
