TYPE OF INCIDENT: DEATH INVESTIGATION

VICTIM: Name Withheld – 3 year old boy
DETAILS:
On July 5th, 2012, the Gilroy Police & Fire Departments responded to the 7500 block of Kentwood Court regarding a 3 year old boy who had been shot. Upon their arrival, emergency personnel immediately began to treat the boy for his life threatening injuries. Unfortunately, emergency personnel were unable to save the boy and he was pronounced deceased while enroute to a local hospital.
The preliminary investigation confirmed the victim was shot with a handgun. The incident occurred within his residence and while family members were home. The circumstances surrounding how he was shot remains on-going and are currently being investigated by Gilroy Police Detectives, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Since the death involved a child, the Santa Clara County Child Death Protocol was activated to ensure this tragic incident is investigated to its fullest. The investigation will involve how firearm(s) were stored within the residence.
The victim is the son of a San Jose Police Officer. The Gilroy Police Department & San Jose Police Department will continue to ensure the family is supported during this difficult time.
