Opelousas Man Dies in Second Fatal Crash Today

This morning, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a single vehicle fatal crash on US Highway 167 south of Ville Platte which claimed the life of an Opelousas man.
According to investigating troopers, at 6:15 a.m., 30-year-old Eddie Ray Williams of Opelousas, was driving a 1992 Ford truck south on US Highway 167. For reasons still under investigation, Williams drove off the right side of the road, struck an embankment and a tree. Williams was not restrained and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead by the Evangeline Parish Coroner.
It is unknown if Williams was impaired when the crash occurred; however, routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
This is the second fatal crash troopers have investigated today. In both crashes the deceased persons were not restrained. Troopers want to remind drivers and occupants of motor vehicles that Louisiana State Law requires all persons to be properly restrained. Wearing a seatbelt can greatly reduce a person’s risk of injury or death in a crash.
