Fireworks Safety and Usage

Fireworks Safety and Usage

In order to promote safety awareness during this holiday, the Lovington Fire Department offers the following safety tips:

• Fireworks should be used only outdoors.
• Always have water readily available.
• Only use fireworks as intended. Do not try to alter them or combine them.
• Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait at least 20 minutes before approaching them and then soak the defective firework in a bucket of water.
• Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter, and the shooter should wear safety glasses.
• Always read and follow label directions.
• Have an adult present. Only individuals over the age of 16 should be allowed to handle fireworks of any type.
• If necessary, store fireworks in a cool, dry place.
• Never throw or point fireworks at other people.
• Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves, and flammable materials.
• Do not ever use homemade fireworks or illegal explosives.
• Fireworks and alcohol do not mix.
• Current State fire restrictions prohibit the use of fireworks in any wildland area.
• Per City ordinance and State statue, it is illegal to offer for sale or to sell any fireworks to children under the age of sixteen years or to any intoxicated person.

Citizens are also reminded that the State of New Mexico and City ordinance only allow for the sale of fireworks during the Independence Day holiday between June 20th and July 6th of each year. City ordinance also only allows for fireworks to be used on July 4th between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. The ordinance does allow for the Fire Chief to authorize the use of fireworks at other times. In an effort to allow our citizens to enjoy their Independence Day holiday, and taking into account climate conditions, the Fire Chief is allowing the usage of permissible fireworks beginning on July 2nd, 2012 through July 5th, 2012 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. each day.
