Snapshot for the week of 06/11/2012 through 06/17/2012
Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station
Crime Prevention Unit

As your Newhall area zone leader, I would like to start with some good news. By partnering with the community and working together we are making a positive impact in our community. In the past weeks you have read reports regarding various theft and other related crimes occurring in the Valle Del Oro and Dockweiler Drive areas. This area has been of concern, not only to me, but to the residents who live there. I am happy to report that during the above dates; we have had no reports of any part one crimes taking place in those areas. By residents reporting crimes in progress, suspicious activity, and by utilizing the "LA Crime Stoppers" tip line, coupled with the work done in the Crime Prevention Unit tracking crime trends, we were able to deploy our resources to effected areas. As you can see this is a prime example that by partnering with your local Sheriff’s Station we can together have an extremely positive impact on the community. I would ask that you remain vigilant in reporting crime and suspicious activity immediately, so that this positive trend remains.

During the late evening hours on 06/13/2012 a burglary was reported at the new Old Town Newhall Library construction site located at 24500 Main Street. Unknown suspect(s) burglarized the nearly built library building and stole numerous items. The investigation is still on-going.

A residential burglary was reported at the 22200 block of 4th Street in Newhall. Suspect(s) entered the residence through an unlocked window. Numerous items were stolen.

A vehicle burglary was reported at the 24300 block of Walnut Street on 06/14/2012 at approximately 3pm. Unknown suspect(s) smashed the front passenger side window of a locked vehicle and stole a black carrying bag that was sitting on the front passenger seat of the vehicle. Numerous items were inside the bag.

Most of the crimes that are reported in the Newhall area are crimes of opportunity. A crime of opportunity is committed without planning. When a suspect sees the chance to commit the crime at that moment and seizes it. Many of these crimes, especially those theft related crimes can be prevented with a little planning. Remember to always lock your doors and windows on not only your vehicle, but on your residence also. Do not keep any type of purse, bags, or valuables in plain view while your vehicle is parked.

I want to thank you for taking the time to read my public safety and crime prevention information updates. With these updates, and with the help of the local news media, we in the crime prevention unit are able to keep the citizens of the Santa Clarita Valley up to date and informed on current crime trends. Together we can send a “not in Santa Clarita” message to potential criminals and thieves.
