North Riverside Residents Advised to Take Safety Precautions During the Period of Hot Weather This Week.

Hot temperatures combined are expected throughout our area this week. Extreme heat can be particularly hazardous for children, seniors, and those with medical conditions or functional needs. In addition to discomfort and fatigue, high temperatures can cause heat-related illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

All residents are urged to take precuations during this period of hot weather, and to check on their elderly family members and/or neighbors.

Extreme Heat Safety Tips

1. Avoid overexertion and strenuous outdoor activities during extreme heat.
2. Consume plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids even if you don't feel thirsty.
3. Exposure to air conditioning for even a few hours a day will reduce the risk for heat-related illness.
4. Keep lights in your home low or off, keep shades drawn and avoid using the oven.
5. Closely monitor children, senior citizens and those who require special care during periods of intense summer heat.
6. Do not leave children or pets in a closed vehicle, event for a few minutes. On a hot day, temperatures inside a closed vehicle can reach 140 degrees F.

If you need assistance, please contact the North Riverside Police Department. Dial 911 to report an EMERGENCY, or 447-9191 for other non-emergency matters.
