Fruitport Township Police Department responded to a call at The Lakes Mall at approximately 4:05 PM on Friday, 06/01/2012, in which mall security reported two children, ages 2 and 5, had been left alone in the play area inside the mall.
Police responded to the scene and made contact with mall security who were with the two young children. Police and security attempted to locate adults responsible for the children for approximately 1 hour.
Contact was eventually made with a 21-year-old female at the mall who indicated one of the children was her biolgical child and the other was her sibling's child. She had been shopping in the mall while the children were left to play in the play area.
The matter has been referred to Children's Protective Services and will also be sent for review by the Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office.
