Dedication event at Chula Vista Nature Center of unique exhibit on Saturday.

On Saturday, April 28, the Chula Vista Nature Center Washed Ashore: Plastics, Sealife & Art exhibit will unveil three brand new sculptures! Washed Ashore artist Angela Haseltine Pozzi will be on-site to answer questions and share insights on the exhibit. There will be lots of family-friendly activities, animal encounters and prizes. AND a very special announcement about the Nature Center at 12:30 p.m.

The community environmental art project transforms thousands of pounds of marine debris into massive animal sculptures to raise awareness of the global crisis of plastic ocean pollution. The nationally acclaimed art project, now on exhibit through Sept. 3, aims to bring awareness to the global crisis of plastic ocean pollution through beautiful, thought-provoking and interactive art pieces.

Washed Ashore includes 17 original art pieces made entirely from thousands of pounds of plastic debris collected along Oregon beaches, with the only exception being the connecting wire and metal framework materials. Hundreds of community volunteers participated in the beach clean-ups and worked with the artist to bring the Washed Ashore pieces to life. Some of the non-biodegradable plastic items used include plastic rope and netting, flip-flop sandals, sand toys, balls, Frisbees, cigarette lighters, toothbrushes and more.

Since launching in 2010, the traveling Washed Ashore exhibit has already made several stops at educational conferences as well as longer showings at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Ore., and most recently the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, Calif. It has earned national press coverage, resulting in numerous requests from around the world to host the exhibit in the coming months. The Chula Vista Nature Center is the first Southern California venue to host the entire exhibit before it begins its international tour.
