Malibu Deputies’ heroic actions help save the life of an elderly woman who could not escape the flames during house fire.
Shortly before 9:00pm, Monday, Deputy Mike Treinen, a twenty-two year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, and Lieutenant Jim Royal, an eighteen year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, were at a Malibu community meeting when they heard Sheriff’s dispatchers requesting units to respond to the 20400 block of Little Rock Way in Malibu regarding a residential fire.
The two deputies recognized the nearby address and realized it was the home of local elderly woman and her caretaker whom they had regular contacts with. Deputy Treinen and Lieutenant Royal immediately responded to the residence. The 9-1-1 dispatcher further advised that they were disconnected from the female caller after she frantically stated, “Fire, fire!”
The residence was almost completely engulfed in flames upon the deputies arrival. With Los Angeles County firefighters still en route and fearing the woman and her caretaker were trapped inside, the deputies entered the burning residence. As they made their around to the rear of the home, they discovered the elderly woman laying on the threshold of an open back door. She was unable to walk and having difficulty breathing.
The two deputies picked up the woman and carried her safely down the driveway to two other deputies who had just driven up in their patrol car.
As the elderly woman was taken by deputies down the hill to an arriving ambulance, Deputy Treinen and Lieutenant Royal re-entered the home to check for the caretaker or any additional occupants before the Fire Department’s arrival. Fortunately, no one else was in the residence.
Four Engine Companies from the Los Angeles County Fire Department quickly knocked out the blaze. Fire officials have estimated the damage at approximately half a million dollars. It is unknown what caused the fire at this time, however it is believed to be accidental.
The 89 year old homeowner was transported to an area hospital where she was treated for smoke inhalation.
The two deputies were also taken to local hospitals after complaining of smoke inhalation related symptoms. The deputies were subsequently released.
