Fruitport Township Police Department has arrested a 23-year-old male from Fruitport for child abuse involving a 10-month-old-victim. The male subject was watching the child at his home in the Village of Fruitport while the child's biological mother was away at work.
Emergency Units (Fruitport Township Fire Department, ProMed EMS, and Fruitport Township Police Department) were dispatched to the home, located in the Village of Fruitport, on February 01, 2012, at approximately 1500 Hours regarding an unresponsive child with difficulty breathing.
The child was transported by ambulance to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, and it was determined the child had multiple head injuries. The child was subsequently transported to DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids for further evaluation and treatment.
Based on the findings of the medical professionals at DeVos Children's Hospital, further investigation into the matter was conducted by Children's Protective Services and Fruitport Township Police Department.
Through this investigation, it was discovered the male subject watching the child had struck the child multiple times, causing the injuries.
The suspect is currently on probation for Felony Killing or Torturing Animals. He was convicted of this prior offense in 2009 in Muskegon County.
The suspect was arrested and lodged at the Muskegon County Jail. The name of the suspect is being withheld pending arraignment.
The name of the victim is not being released.
