INCIDENT: House and family saved from fire by residential sprinkler system
DATE: February 4, 2012
LOCATION: 1651 #11 Massachusetts Ave
In the early morning hours of February 4, 2012, Marietta Fire and Police Departments responded to a report of a house fire located at 1651 #11 Massachusetts Avenue. When the Fire Department arrived on scene, they discovered that the fire had just been extinguished by a sprinkler system that was installed in the residence.
At the time of the fire there were six children, ranging in age from 4-12, and five adults inside the residence. Most of these occupants were asleep at the time of the fire. The investigation revealed that the fire started in a back bedroom of the residence, immediately endangering the lives of several adults. The adults attempted to extinguish the fire but were unsuccessful. Because sprinkler heads work independently of each other, the fire was brought under control and extinguished by a single sprinkler head located in the bedroom where the fire originated. Fire damage was very minor and limited to that bedroom.
The lives of eleven people and their home were saved due to a residential sprinkler system and working smoke detectors which alerted the family.
