INCIDENT: Large Narcotic and Weapon Seizure
DATE: January 17, 2012, 3:00am
LOCATION: 1035 Franklin Road, Autumn View Apartments
SUSPECT: Names withheld pending investigation
CHARGES: Multiple Charges Pending

The Marietta Police Department is currently investigating a large narcotic and weapons seizure, involving several stolen firearms, which occurred at the Autumn View Apartments located at 1035 Franklin Road.

Marietta Officers responded to the Marietta Hotel located on Northwest Parkway at approximately 3:00am for a stolen cell phone report. Officers met with the victim who stated that a black male suspect stole his iPhone 4 cell phone. The officers were able to locate the stolen iPhone by utilizing the “Find My iPhone” application (app). This app is designed to aid owners in locating their misplaced or lost smart phones; however, in the hands of savvy and technologically aware officers, it is an effective investigative tool. The officer stated that not only did the app lead them to a specific building within Autumn View Apartments, but it also indicated that the stolen iPhone was located at the northeast corner of the building.

Marietta Officers located an apartment at the northeast corner of the building with the lights on which appeared to be occupied. Officers smelled a very strong odor of suspected marijuana emanating from the suspect apartment. Officers knocked and announced themselves to the occupants of the apartment. While officers were talking to a subject through the door of the apartment, a suspect attempted to flee the apartment by jumping off the second story balcony. The suspect was immediately taken into custody by other officers and the stolen iPhone was recovered from his possession.

Officers were able to obtain a search warrant for the apartment and detain several subjects that were located inside. Other arrests and charges are pending as the investigation continues.

The Marietta Police Department would like to encourage citizens who own smart phones to check with their cell phone providers to see if similar applications are available for their phones. This application is not only a great tool for owners in recovering lost or misplaced phones, but can also be utilized by law enforcement as an investigative tool in recovering stolen property.

The following items were recovered from the apartment after the execution of the search warrant:

1,100 grams of suspected marijuana
Five handguns, three of which are stolen from various locations
One assault rifle
42 tablets of Oxycodone
One digital scale
