INCIDENT: 2011 Holiday Crime Suppression Plan exceeds expectations
DATE: December 22, 2011

In November 2011, the Marietta Police Department released its 2011 Holiday Season Crime Prevention Plan in order to educate the community on the extra safety measures that were put in place to protect Marietta’s residents and businesses during the holiday season. The implementation of this plan has led to the arrests of four individuals that were in the process of committing crimes when caught by police within the last three days.

The most recent arrest occurred today, Thursday December 22, 2011 at 10:15am when police officers, who were assigned to patrol business districts in their area, were dispatched to a suspicious vehicle that was parked near the Taco Bell located at 1180 Powder Springs Road. The vehicle, a white Lexus passenger car, was observed by witnesses to have driven around the business a couple of times and parked in several different parking spaces. When officers arrived on scene they observed the suspect wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and back pack walking towards the business. The suspect immediately ran off when he observed the approaching officers. The suspect threw a handgun during the foot chase and was caught by the officers. The suspect is identified as 20 year old Deandre Antonio Conway of Marietta. Conway faces multiple charges to include attempted armed robbery, obstruction and theft by receiving since the vehicle he used was confirmed as stolen.

Since December 19, 2011, three additional arrests were made on suspects while they were in the process of committing crimes. A Marietta officer made an arrest of a subject that was in possession of stolen items and burglary tools used to break into vehicles on Washington Avenue while the officer was operating one of our electric powered, T3 cycles in a business district. Another officer arrested two suspects that fled on foot while the officer observed them robbing two victims in a residential area on Franklin Road. Units that were assigned to the Holiday Crime Suppression detail assisted in apprehending the two suspects. Both suspects were charged with armed robbery.
The Marietta Police Department would like to continue to encourage citizens to call 911 if they observe ANY suspicious activity, no matter how minor they feel it might be. This Holiday Crime Suppression Plan is a success in part because the police department and the citizens work together to keep the community safe.
