The Compton Youth Activities League, a place for youth 8 -17.

The Compton Youth Activities League (YAL) is a non-profit after school program serving students aged 8-17 years old, in the City of Compton. Compton’s YAL host 40-50 students on a daily basis from 3 P.M.-7 P.M., Monday-Friday. The Staff currently includes a deputy sheriff, mentor, tutor, and a dance instructor.

At the YAL students are required to dedicate the first hour at the center to homework, or reading. After the first hour the students can engage in many activities that are provided. Currently the Compton YAL offers boxing, dancing, drama, leadership, life skills, movies, and basketball.

Throughout the year, the Compton YAL also hosts a Halloween haunted house, Thanksgiving dinner, Chrisman dinner, a luau with a dance performance, and fieldtrips. The most recent fieldtrip was to Knott's Berry Farm and the circus.

The Compton YAL was selected by the LA84 Foundation to receive a $100,000.00 grant. With this grant, the boxing area will be upgraded, two NBA style basketball courts will be purchased, and part of the parking lot will be covered with 6,000 square feet of artificial turf for soccer or football.

This center offers a wide variation of services to its students, from drama classes to boxing. Deputy Ben-Sahile feels this is needed so all students can thrive.

Interested in having your children join the YAL, contact Deputy Ben-Sahile at [email protected] and you can visit him at the Compton YAL, 700 North Alameda Street, Compton 90220
