Weekend Snow Expected for Much of Wisconsin

Travel conditions could be difficult…plan ahead

(MADISON) – A winter storm watch is in effect for West Central Wisconsin for Saturday. A potent storm system is expected to impact travel conditions. That's why ReadyWisconsin is encouraging
motorists to be prepared before they hit the highways.

The National Weather Service says the system will move into Wisconsin bringing a rain and snow mixture late Friday and then turning into snow on Saturday. Western and Central Wisconsin are
expected to receive the heaviest snowfall amounts of up to six inches.

This from the NWS Green Bay: A winter storm is expected to impact the area this weekend. Rain and snow is expected to develop late Friday night or Saturday morning, and then continue into Sunday morning. At this time, the heaviest band of snow is expected to fall north and west of a Wautoma to Marinette line. There is still some uncertainty in the storm track and amount of cold air near the ground, therefore the band of heavy snow could still shift over the next day or two. If you have travel plans this weekend, monitor later forecasts for any changes on this impending winter storm.

Road conditions are expected to deteriorate Saturday. Here are a couple of things you can do to make sure you and your family are prepared:
1. Make sure there is a winter emergency survival kit in each of your family’s vehicles. The kit should include:
• Shovel, windshield scraper and small broom
• Flashlight with extra batteries
• Battery-powered radio
• Snack food including energy bars and water
• Matches and small candles
• Extra hats, socks and mittens
• First aid kit with pocket knife
• Necessary medications
• Blankets or sleeping bag
• Road salt, sand or cat litter for traction
• Booster cables, emergency flares and reflectors
• Fluorescent distress flag and whistle to attract attention
• Cell phone adapter to plug into car lighter
2. Call 511 or go to www.511wi.gov for the latest Wisconsin road conditions before you travel.
3. You can also go to http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/data/paw/radar/ssecwrc.gif for a map of travel conditions across the Upper Midwest.
4. Take it slow! We all need a couple of snowstorms to remind us of our safe winter driving. Reduce your speed and don’t slam on the brakes.
