NEWS RELEASE UPDATE

Severe Wind Incident Causing Power Outages and Numerous Hazards

December 1, 2011
5:30 p.m.

The City of Arcadia and surrounding communities experienced extremely high winds since last night. The winds caused several power outages throughout the community, along with downed trees, branches, and power lines. The City has received about 400 calls relating to tree issues only.

The City has had crews in the field all day responding to incidents and clearing the damage and blocked streets as quickly as possible. Incidents are handled on a priority basis with the most urgent being addressed first.

No injuries have been reported and traffic signals are in the process of being restored. Eleven intersections are still down at this time. Seven buildings have been “red tagged.”

Street closures: Foothill from Baldwin to Michillinda; Longden from El Monte to Holly; Camino Real from Santa Anita to El Monte; and Colorado from Santa Anita to Baldwin.

The city’s current primary focus is clearing the major arterials and then the secondary streets. Trees on structures, fallen power lines and removing obstacles from the public-right-of-way are also priorities. Extensive clean up is expected to begin on Friday, December 2, 2011.

The Public Works, Fire and Police Departments will all have extra staff on duty tonight to address any problems that may arise.

Southern CA Edison is still working on restoring power outages. Please stay in your homes as darkness falls to prevent any accident or injury. If you encounter a downed power line – DO NOT TOUCH the line! Notify authorities immediately.

Treat any signals that are “blacked out” or not working as a four-way stop sign and be alert with your surroundings.

Remember to dial 911 for emergencies only. All non-emergency calls should be directed to (626) 574-5121.
