2,068 vehicles have new Mobile Data Computer Systems installed and deployed

5,400 students have been trained

The following sheriff's patrol stations have fully deployed their MDCS: Altadena, Carson, Century, Cerritos, Compton, Crescenta Valley, East LA, Industry, Lakewood, Lancaster, Lomita, Lost Hills, Marina del Rey, Palmdale, Pico Rivera, Santa Clarita Valley, South LA, Temple, West Hollywood, as well as specialized units of: Community College Bureau, Court Services - Civil Management Unit, Metrolink, Operation Safe Streets (OSS) Bureau, Parks Bureau, and Parole Compliance. Nearly completed with their MDCS deployments are: Community Impact Team, Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Bureau, County Services Bureau, Court Services Transportation, Metro Transit Services Bureau, Norwalk, Parking Enforcement, San Dimas, Special Enforcement Bureau and Walnut.

Progress In Mobile Technology With 1,000+ Mobile Computers Deployed To Protect The Community

The first Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) vehicles equipped with its mobile data computer systems (MDCS) are now rolling out on the streets, protecting residents. LASD patrol cars, motorcycles, prisoner transport vehicles and command post SUVs outfitted with integrated computer systems have begun rolling out on the streets, protecting residents.

The new in-car computer systems will enhance the access that over 2,400 field units have to new public safety technologies. Deputies will now be able to utilize the Internet, Sheriff’s Data Network, Intranet and other criminal databases from their vehicles with the state-of-the-art mobile data computers.

Deputies can also access a variety of law enforcement information including fingerprint databases, Global Positioning System (GPS) expedited routing to emergency calls, and other critical resources peace officers need to efficiently serve the public. Using the new GPS and mapping system, deputies can arrive at calls sooner since they will not need to look up the fastest route to calls on maps.

Having access to the Internet and LASD Intranet enables deputies to quickly provide information such as locations of social services, homeless shelters, and other information that is both current and handy when people need it the most.

Sheriff Lee Baca said, "Raytheon worked closely with our sheriff's deputies, engineers and technicians to integrate the latest public safety technologies and capabilities into our vehicles. This new mobile data computer system will greatly increase the efficiency of deputies in the field, providing them more knowledge at their fingertips, and enabling them to do more for the public now and in the years ahead."

The investment by the LASD and County of Los Angeles will dramatically upgrade the 1987 mobile digital technology currently in use and whose replacement parts are no longer available. This huge leap in technology is important to the future of public safety for the millions of people living in the greater Los Angeles area.

The $19.9 investment with Raytheon to integrate the software and technology from several different companies including Penske, Geo-Spacial Technologies and Panasonic, set the total project cost of the endeavor at $33 million. Raytheon's new Public Safety Regional Technology Center is opening in Downey this winter, and a new UCLA Center for Public Safety Network Systems will create a collaborative research forum that brings together academia, industry and public safety agencies.
