Winter Weather briefing at 2:00PM today

Hello again,

NWS Birmingham and Huntsville will be doing a briefing on 800 MHz "MAIN" at 2PM today to discuss the winter weather situation and impacts tonight into Tuesday across central/north Alabama. After a short discussion on 800 MAIN, NWS Huntsville will switch over to Talk Group 21 to provide additional information.

As mentioned earlier, graphical slides will be provided before the briefing this afternoon but here are some initial thoughts on the forecast through Tuesday morning:

* We are expecting a rain/snow mix to develop across northwest Alabama late this afternoon with any mix likely changing to all snow after sunset this evening (Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin and Lawrence counties).
* The rain/snow area will spread east across the area tonight with most areas changing to all snow at some point overnight.
* The heaviest "snowfall" is expected to occur west of I-65 and in the higher elevations (above 1200 FT) where the temperatures will be a couple degrees colder.
* Snow will end/change back over to a rain/snow mix from west to east Tuesday morning.
* Snowfall / accumulations -- areas west of I-65 could see several inches on grassy/elevated surfaces tonight/early Tuesday. Lesser amounts are expected across northeast Alabama.
* Road temperatures are warm so we expect much of the snow to melt on contact and primary roads/highways should remain in good shape. However, any bursts of moderate to heavy snow overnight could accumulate on road surfaces, especially bridges and overpasses.
