New US 10/WIS 34 south interchange open to traffic. Drive carefully and happy hunting or shopping this weekend.

Crews recently opened the new US 10/WIS 34 south interchange, west of Junction City. The new interchange is part of the US 10 Marshfield to Stevens Point corridor expansion.

Now that the interchange is open to traffic, WIS 34 between US 10 and WIS 66 is no longer detoured.

Construction of this section of the US 10 expansion project started in July 2010 at a cost of $25 million. Improvements included:

A 65 mph, four-lane divided freeway from WIS 34 south to WIS 34 north.

New overpasses at Portage County G and Portage County O.

A new railroad overpass.

New interchanges with WIS 34 south and WIS 34 north.

Old US 10 between WIS 34 north and WIS 34 is now new County P.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is expanding 31 miles of US 10 from two to four lanes. The new highway currently bypasses downtown Stevens Point (west of I-39) and Junction City.

The new alignment will also bypass the communities of Auburndale, Blenker, and Milladore.

The new US 10 corridor will provide a highway that will safely and efficiently handle increasing traffic volumes. US 10 serves central Wisconsin as an important east/west highway connecting the Twin Cities and the Fox Valley. It is an important regional, state and national link for business, industry, recreation and agriculture.
The expansion project represents an estimated $275 million investment in central Wisconsin's transportation system. Construction began in 2006 and is currently scheduled for completion in 2012.
