NARCO DETECTIVES WARN PARENTS ABOUT MARIJUANA-LACED CANDY & LA COUNTY FIREFIGHTERS DISCUSS SAFETY TIPS FOR HALLOWEEN
****MEDIA AVAILABILITY****
Who: Narcotics Bureau, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department;
and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
What: Detectives from the Narcotics Bureau will display samples of
candies, soda, freezer pops and other snack foods
containing untested amounts of concentrated marijuana.
The items, which were recently seized, were sold at local
marijuana dispensaries and other locations. The items were
determined to be unlicensed, untested and labeled in a
manner that improperly advises consumers of their contents
or dosage. Detectives will discuss concerns for public health
and safety over the packaging (packaged that attracts
children and teens), the widely varying drug content
and the possible presence of toxins from pesticides and
fertilizers. Detectives would like the public to be aware
of the dangers of accidentally ingesting marijuana-laced
products that may look like candy.
Parents and teachers are encouraged to check Halloween
candy and snacks for indications of tampering. Please visit
the National Crime Prevention Council website at
www.ncpc.org for more information.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department encourages
families to take a few simple safety precautions to reduce
fire risks and injuries:
Use battery-powered lights for Jack-O-Lanterns
Buy costumes that are flame resistant
Carry a flashlight or glow stick to be seen at night
When: Friday, October 28, 2011, at 10:00 a.m.
