Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team Takes Suicidal Person Into Custody After a Long Stand Off

Modesto, CA – Sheriff’s deputies responded to a suicidal person near the intersection of Crowslanding Rd and Grayson Rd on Thursday evening at around 6:00 PM. When deputies arrived they found 42 y/o Alex Turner of Modesto sitting in his vehicle parked next to a golf course. Turner got out of his car several times threatening to kill himself. At one point he was seen holding an object to his chest, the object was believed to have been a Zip Gun.

As deputies tried to get Turner to surrender he began to drive away. Deputies tried to keep him contained and he rammed a Sheriff’s Office vehicle. Turner drove to the 5300 Block of A Street where he ran into a residence and barricaded himself. The Sheriff’s Office SWAT team surrounded the residence and a hostage negotiator attempted to get him to surrender to deputies for several hours.

At about 11:50 PM chemical agents were used to get Turner to surrender. Turner lit the residence on fire and climbed out a window on to the roof of the residence. SWAT deputies captured Turner on the roof where he was taken into custody. The fire department arrived on scene and put out the fire.

Turner was arrested for unlawful carrying and possession of a weapon, evading a peace officer and arson. After being cleared at a local hospital he will be booked at the county jail.
