CRIME TREND UPDATE – SAN MATEO PARK BURGLARIES
Several burglaries have occurred in the San Mateo Park area since mid-August. In addition, residential burglaries continue to be a crime issue of high concern to both the San Mateo Community in general and the San Mateo Police Department.
SMPD realizes and recognizes that the residential burglaries are traumatic and invasive to the victims. Few crimes are as unnerving as those where a stranger was accessing your home without your permission or knowledge. We are sensitive to the fact that burglaries are very personal.
The common method of operation (M/O) theme for these residential burglaries is access by the suspect at the rear portion of the residence, out of sight from the street. Please remember to secure all of your doors and windows when you leave your residence, even if it is only for a brief period of time. Set alarms if you have them. Any layer of security such as locking access points and alarm systems provides one more reason for the suspect not to choose your residence.
Remember also to lock and secure any vehicles. Bring any valuables in your vehicle with you, or stow them out of sight. Burglars know that auto burglaries are risky, but the risk becomes worthwhile when there are valuables in plain view.
SMPD Combats Crime Trends such as these with the following proactive strategies:
• Constant monitoring of crime trend data from resources like www.CrimeReports.com
• Review and re-use of successful operational plans on similar trends
• Reliance on innovative ideas from street officers who work your beat
• High Profile, High Visibility Patrols
• Plainclothes Officers and Unmarked Cars
• Foot Patrols and Bicycle Patrols
• Cooperative efforts with adjoining police agencies
• Communication to and reliance on Neighborhood Watch for additional sets of “eyes and ears” in the neighborhood
It has also come to SMPD’s attention that some residential burglaries may not have been reported to the police. If there are any unreported or late reported burglaries outstanding in your area, please call SMPD Investigations at 650-522-7650. Reporting crime to the police helps us to identify and address crime trends as quickly as possible.
