Man Carrying Stolen Copper Pipe Arrested At County Park
Wednesday, October 05, 2011 at 9:45 p.m., Parks Bureau Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrested a man for Burglary at Earvin “Magic” Johnson Park.
Deputies saw two men carrying large duffel bags long after the park had closed. When they approached, one of the men dropped the bag he was carrying and ran from the deputies. They were able to detain the other man, Leo Russell (Suspect).
Deputies found that each of the bags contained forty pounds of copper pipe. When the two men were initially seen, they were walking from the vacated Ujima Housing Project. This area has been the site of many burglaries where the copper pipe is removed from the interior of the vacant apartment complex and sold for its monetary value.
Suspect Russell, who is a transient, was booked at Century Sheriff's Station and is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail.
