Crime Trend – “Chain Snatch” Robberies

Century Station’s reporting districts have recently seen an increase in “chain snatch” robberies. Suspect(s) have been targeting students and female Hispanics who are walking or riding bicycles alone. Usually the victim is alone, wearing ear phones, or has exposed jewelry. The items usually taken are gold chains, bracelets, large screen cellular telephones, and personal music devices.

Suspect(s) will “snatch” gold chain(s) or other personal property from the victims while they’re distracted or simply walking down the street. Suspect(s) approach the victims and demand their visible jewelry or electronic devices. Suspect(s) are usually armed or simulate having weapons.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Century Station would like to remind you to please walk in groups if possible and be aware of your surroundings. Try to avoid walking with ear phones in your ears, texting while walking, or having exposed jewelry. Oftentimes, suspect(s) are opportunistic and look for distracted victims.

Please register your cell phones or personal music devices. If the item came with an insurance card, please fill it out and submit it. Also, contact your cellular carrier and inquire about cellular device tracking systems, which are usually a free application offered by your cellular carrier.
