There have been 11 confirmed cases of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, in Wood County over the past two weeks, the Wood County Health Department announced Friday.
The highly contagious bacterial disease affects the respiratory tract, and is spread by contact with respiratory droplets from an infected person through coughing.
The condition masquerades as a cold for the first couple weeks, with symptoms like runny nose, mild fever and/or a “mild but irritating cough,” according to a Wood County Health Department news release. An infected person is most contagious during this period.
The illness then progresses to fits of “explosive” coughing that interrupt breathing, eating and sleeping, and these are often followed by vomiting and exhaustion. After coughing, the infected may make a “crowing” or “whooping” noise when trying to inhale.
Anyone showing these symptoms is advised to contact their health provider for testing.
“Prevention is the key,” said Susan Kunferman, Wood County Health Department health officer, in a written statement.
She encouraged people to check their immunization status, especially for infants, children, new parents and anyone who will be in contact with their infants.
