Medford Township Prepares for Hurricane Irene
Medford Township Prepares for Hurricane Irene
Medford, NJ- The National Weather Service has predicted that Hurricane Irene will hit our area over the weekend between Saturday night and Sunday night. At this time, it is expected that we will experience tropical storm or hurricane force winds as well as very heavy rainfall. These weather conditions are expected to cause major flooding and prolonged power outages.
The Medford Township Office of Emergency Management is working closely with municipal officials, public safety partners, and private entities to prepare for the impacts of this potentially historic storm. Equipment, including generators and chainsaws, are being primed to be ready for service. Additional police, fire, public works, and emergency medical personnel are being scheduled to assist residents through the storm and its aftermath. In addition, shelters are being prepared should the need arise to evacuate residents from their homes.
Residents in low-lying areas along the creek and lakes are urged to prepare themselves and their property for potential flooding. It is also recommended that all residents prepare to be without power for a prolonged period of time. Citizens can visit the FEMA website, www.ready.gov for information on how to prepare for a hurricane and flooding. Additional information on emergency preparedness can also be found by visiting the Township’s website, www.medfordtownship.com, and clicking below the “Ready or Not” icon on the lower right corner of the page.
