NYS Law requires children under 14 to wear a helmet while on bicycles, scooters, skateboards,or in-line skates.

As warmer weather approaches and outdoor activity increases, it is important to remember that the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law (Section 1238) requires that all children under the age of fourteen wear a helmet securely fastened while riding on a bicycle, in-line skates, a skateboard, or a scooter. Not only is it the law -- it is a basic common sense safety precaution.

It's also a good idea for adults; a helmet can be the difference between bumps and bruises and serious injury from a minor accident. And remember -- the best way to encourage your child to wear a helmet is for Mom and Dad to set an example. Please make it a habit for both children and adults.
