Suspect Arrested in Connection with Multiple Larcenies from Vehicles

Dearborn, Mi. —.
The Dearborn Police arrested a 36 year old, w/m, in connection with multiple larcenies from automobiles that have occurred over the past several days in the City of Dearborn. At 3:40 this morning, uniform officers observed the suspect vehicle, a 1999, 4 door, green, Ford Explorer, in the area of Denwood and Marshall. The suspect parked on Marshall and exited the vehicle for a brief period of time. The suspect re-entered the vehicle and drove to the area of Telegraph and S. Rosevere. Plain clothes officers set up surveillance in the area. The suspect was observed a short time later approaching several vehicles parked in driveways and on the streets, peering inside using a flashlight and pulling on door handles. Dearborn Police are attempting to match the recovered items with the reports that have been made. Numerous items were recovered including, wallets, credit cards, cell phone, GPS navigation units, keys, coins and jewelry. This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Dearborn Police Detective Bureau at 313-943-2255.

The suspect is expected to be charged and arraigned tomorrow afternoon at the 19th District Court.

Chief Ronald Haddad stated, “This is a crime of opportunity. The suspect was entering unlocked vehicles. I can’t stress enough how important it is for residents to remove all valuables from their vehicles and lock the doors.”

The Dearborn Police Department has received several reports of items being stolen out of unoccupied parked vehicles. Several of the reported larcenies involved vehicles with unlocked doors or open windows. These recent incidents have occurred primary in the west end of the city. All residents are asked to take steps to avoid becoming a victim of this crime of opportunity. The Dearborn Police Department would like to remind residents to do the following:

• Remember to keep your vehicle locked and windows rolled up even if the vehicle is parked in your driveway or in front of your home.
• Park your vehicle in your garage or in your driveway whenever possible.
• Do not leave valuables (GPS Units, MP3 Players, laptops, money, etc) visible in your vehicle. If possible, remove all valuables from your vehicle.
• Never leave any personal information in your vehicle such as vehicle title, registration, or insurance.
• Residents should avoid leaving their vehicles running unattended even for a short period.
• Be aware of your surroundings & trust your instincts
• Watch out for your neighbors
• Report any suspicious people or cars in your neighborhood to the police
• Examples of suspicious activity may include:
o Vehicles that you do not recognize as belonging in the area
o Vehicles that are observed circling the area
o People on foot who are not familiar to you
o People who are observed looking into vehicles or attempting to open vehicles
