A month-long Sheriff’s Department STAR Camp for over 100 students was held at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu during the month of July.

The Success Through Awareness and Resistance (STAR) Unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department coordinated the camp, and according to parents and their children, it was a huge success.

The two five-day youth camps were held during July 18-22 and July 25-29, 2011.

The 100+ students per camp were kept busy each day with activities such as inflatable obstacle courses, reptile demonstrations, excellent team building exercises and games, law enforcement demonstrations from multiple policing agencies including Special Weapons & Tactics (SWAT), bomb squad, canine, and Search & Rescue, as well as field trips to Magic Mountain and Paradise Cove beach. Students from the cities of Hidden Hills, Westlake, Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Santa Clarita, and Malibu attended the camps. There was a long waiting list of students hoping to get onto the list of confirmed campers.

The STAR Unit is dedicated to educating students throughout Los Angeles County about life skills and the dangers of drug use and gang affiliation. The deputies assigned to the STAR Unit currently teach approximately 40,000 students in over 200 schools throughout the county. The Star Camp is a continuation of these efforts during the summer.

The cost of the camp is financed through family contributions and donations from the community and local businesses.

For more information contact the STAR Unit at (562) 946-7263 during normal business hours.
