NYS Law requires parked vehicles to face the same direction as traffic; please do not park "left wheels to curb."

Section 1203 of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law requires that when vehicles are parked at the curb, "On a one-way roadway such vehicle shall be facing in the direction of authorized traffic movement; on a two-way roadway such vehicle shall be facing in the direction of authorized traffic movement on that portion of the roadway on which the vehicle rests."

In short, vehicles should be parked facing in the same direction as traffic -- on a two-way street, that is normally "right wheels to curb." Violations of this law appear to be increasing, especially in our residential areas, and we do receive complaints about it from concerned residents.

Parking in the wrong direction is a safety hazard for several reasons:

1. In can disorient drivers, particularly those who are not familiar with an area.
2. Pulling out of the parking spot into the opposite flow of traffic is dangerous; the driver's view is obstructed as he or she must look over his or her shoulder into the vehicle's blind spot.
3. Most important: it is a danger to pedestrians, who can become confused by the parked vehicles and look in the wrong direction for oncoming traffic while crossing the street.

We ask your assistance in compliance with this statute for the safety of motorists and pedestrians; summonses may be issued when necessary. Thank you.
