Police Incident: Drowning
On 07/13/2011 at 9:18 pm, officers responded to the rear of the Harbortown Development to the fishing pier on a report of a possible drowning. Officers learned from witnesses, that two men that had been drinking challenged each other to swim from the pier to a piling in the river. Both men, city residents, Angel Mendez age 31 and Raul Ortega age 45 jumped from the pier and began to swim, soon after they began to struggle with the currents.
Perth Amboy Fire Marine Unit 5 was in the area and responded immediately they were directed to Mendez by witnesses via dispatch and were able to get him out of the water.
Perth Amboy Police Marine Unit 2, the US Coast Guard, NYPD Marine Unit, as well as Aviation Helicopters from NYPD and the US Coast Guard responded to search the waters for Ortega. At 12:48 am, he was recovered by Perth Amboy Police Marine 2 approximately 50 ft south of the pier. Victim was pronounced dead at 1:05 am.
