New US 10 alignment scheduled to open in Portage County WIS 34 south closing, detoured to complete interchange construction

Newly constructed US 10 between WIS 34 south and WIS 34 north is scheduled to open to traffic on Thursday, July 21. Construction of this section of the US 10 expansion project started in July 2010 at a cost of $25 million. Improvements include:
A 65 mph, four-lane divided freeway from WIS 34 south to WIS 34 north.
New overpasses at Portage County G and Portage County O.
A new railroad overpass.
New interchanges with WIS 34 south and WIS 34 north.

After the new alignment opens, existing US 10 between WIS 34 south and WIS 34 north will become Portage County P. The opening of the new US 10 alignment is subject to change based on favorable weather conditions and construction status.

Interchange construction closing WIS 34 south

On Wednesday, July 20 the south side of the WIS 34 south/US 10 intersection will be closed to allow for the construction of the remainder of the WIS 34 south interchange. New County P will also be closed at the intersection with WIS 34 south. The intersection will be closed until November 2011.

Traffic will be detoured via WIS 66 and Wood/Portage County O. WIS 34, south of existing US 10, will remain open to local traffic during construction of the interchange.

WIS 80 extended in Wood County

In August 2011, WIS 80 will be extended to run concurrent with WIS 13 from Pittsville to US 10. The extension of WIS 80 is necessary to prepare for the construction of a new roundabout at the existing US 10 west/WIS 13 intersection south of Marshfield to be constructed in 2012.

WIS 13 is scheduled to be rerouted to run concurrent with WIS 34 and US 10 when the remainder of the US 10 corridor is opened in August 2012.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is expanding 31 miles of US 10 from a two-lane, undivided highway to a four-lane, divided highway between WIS 13 near Marshfield to I-39, north of Stevens Point. The new four-lane highway will bypass the communities of Auburndale, Blenker, Milladore, Junction City, and downtown Stevens Point. The project represents an estimated $275 million investment in central Wisconsin’s transportation system. Construction began in 2006 and is scheduled for completion in late 2012.
