Tustin Police Department Tip of the Month: Plants for Security

There are no plants that will actually catch a burglar or replace proper security inside your home. The plants on this list will, through thorns or prickly foliage, restrict access to the yard or the home. These plants are available through most nurseries.

Landscaping Tips:
Security can be maintained along with aesthetics.

Fences: Prune tree limbs high enough to avoid easy access over fences. Avoid thick foliage which might conceal a breach in the fence.

Roofs: Avoid trees near roof tops. They act as a natural ladder. Prune trees limbs away from the wall side of trees.

Doorways/Porches: Keep shrubs trimmed low. Keep shrubs away the address.

Windows: Keep shrubs pruned below sills. If full length windows, use low profile shrubs. Barbed wire or climbing roses both discourage prowlers but roses smell nicer and look a lot friendlier from inside your home.

Use low growing plant with thorns under low windows, taller growing plants under high windows. Design landscaping and prune shrubs and trees so they do not block the view of front entrances or porches. Also make sure that they do not cover the windows in case you need to get out during a fire.

Proper landscaping will give you, your neighbors, and patrolling police a view of potential problems and deny an intruder a place to hide.

Security Plants include Darwin Barbary, Threespin Barbary, Red Japanese Barbary, Bougainvillea, Dwarft Gravillea, Quince, Pampas Grass, Lisbon, Eureka, Bearss, Hybrid Holly, Upright Juniper, Chinese Hollygrape, Mexico Palo Verde, Firethorn, Dwarf Firethorn, Pomegranate, Roses, Gooseberry, Spanish Bayonet, and Dwarf Xylosma.
