Sheriff’s Detectives held an open house and news conference in the City of Industry Thursday, showcasing over one million dollars of recovered trademark plastic products.

The purpose of this open house was to educate business owners, the public and other law enforcement agencies affected by this type of crime. In attendance were the Chief Executive Officers and presidents of affected businesses, city officials and executive personnel from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were contacted by several commercial businesses in the City of Industry requesting assistance with a theft problem directly related to trademark plastic products. Each business stated their losses were between $1million and $2 million annually. The trademark plastic products included plastic pallets and containers.

After several months of investigation, detectives discovered that the theft of plastic products involves a complex web of organized crime and occurring both nationally and internationally, with an impact on businesses and consumers.

In most cases, the illegally obtained trademark plastic products are ground up and sold to plastic manufacturers, who in turn, manufacture new pallets and containers and sell them back to the victim businesses. Businesses in the San Gabriel Valley alone suffer losses exceeding $10 million per year.

During the first phase of the investigation, suspected businesses were targeted for inspection and educated on the laws related to the California Business and Professions Code.

In some cases, criminal filings were sought. Businesses found to be in possession of trademark plastic property had the property seized and stored in the City of Industry.
