Beware of “grandparent” scams over the phone.

Napa residents have been receiving phone calls from suspects who pretend to be their grandchildren. The callers claim to be in jail, or have to pay a traffic fine, and to be in desperate need of a few thousand dollars. They request the money to be wired to a specific location. Often, when the person receiving the calls starts asking too many questions, the callers hang up.

Always verify who you are speaking with, and then double check with other relatives. Don’t be in a hurry to wire the money without confirming that it is indeed a relative who you are happy to help out, that you are sending your money to.
