Wellesley residents have reported receiving calls from an automated computer voice during the day on April 20, 2011. The automated phone call indicates that it is from Sovereign Bank and there has been fraudulent activity detected on a person’s bank account. Callers are told that their debit card has been ‘frozen’ and cannot be used due to this fraudulent activity. Callers are then asked to enter their personal information to verify who they are.
A check with Sovereign bank indicates that this is a fraudulent call. These calls appear to be going out at random, and have called residents who do not even have a Sovereign bank account. The calls have even gone to the Wellesley Police Department!
Please do not give out your personal information from a call you receive. If you are concerned about your bank account, please contact your bank directly, via a phone call you initiate. The matter is being looked into by the Wellesley Police Department.
