2011 Boston Marathon Road Closure Information

The 2011 running of the Boston Marathon will impact traffic in Wellesley on Monday, April 18, 2011. In addition to road closures, there will be several parking restrictions on the day of the race. The marathon route effectively divides the town in half. Route 9 is one of the only ways to get ‘across’ the marathon route while the race is underway. For updates and live road closure information, please check and refresh this page throughout the marathon day.

The course runs through Wellesley from Route 135 (Central Street) at the Natick line to Wellesley Square, and then shifts to Route 16 (Washington Street) from Grove Street to the Newton line. The course will be completely shut down to all vehicle traffic. The off ramps from Route 9, both east and west, at Rt. 16 will also be shut down.

After 8:45 AM, vehicles will be removed from the route, and no vehicle traffic will be allowed to cross over the route. The road will re-open at approximately 2:30 PM, and will start from west to east, beginning on Route 135 at the Natick line and heading towards Newton. Traffic will be diverted, and Wellesley Police officers will be working along the entire route. However, if you need to travel through Wellesley on the day of the race, you should expect delays and plan your route ahead of time. Remember, you will not be able to cross over the marathon course, and Route 9 is the only road that will be open during that time.

The following parking restrictions will take place on April 18:
NO PARKING on the route on the day of the race. This is from Rt. 135 at the Natick line to Grove Street and Rt. 16 from Grove Street to the Newton line. No parking signs will be posted alerting motorists to this. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE TICKETED AND TOWED.

Additionally, there will be NO PARKING on the following side streets:

Pond Road
Linden Street from Weston to Crest Road.
River Street
Brook Street
Route 9
Wareland Road

Signs will be posted, and vehicles will be given a parking ticket and towed.
