Text message scam in Anacortes

Several residents in Anacortes have received a spam text on their phones over the past week. The body of the text advises the recipient that the message is from the “Whidbey Island Bank” and that the “card” of the recipient “has been deactivated”. A 360 area code phone number is included, and contact is requested from the recipient.

Whidbey Island Bank, along with local Law Enforcement agencies are aware of this issue. We remind you that your bank, (or banks from which you have no account), will not send you cell phone texts. Further, they will not attempt to solicit information from you in this manner.

If you have received such a text, and are concerned about ID fraud, please visit our website; http://www.cityofanacortes.org/police.asp for more information on how to protect yourself.
