Alert

Distraction burglars claiming to be city workers are targeting Alhambra residents. Be wary of strangers at your door.

Within the last few days two “distraction burglaries” were reported, one in southeast Alhambra and one in southwest Alhambra. In both cases the suspects, one male and one female, claim to be city workers. They are approaching elderly homeowners requesting to inspect the home’s foundation for earthquake damage caused by the Japan earthquake or that they are there to inspect the home for city “beautification” program eligibility. The intent of these individuals is to gain entry into homes when the homeowner is distracted through conversation with the suspect's accomplice and the homeowner is not paying attention to their property. Once inside, one suspect will rummage through everything looking for cash and jewelry.

Distraction burglaries occur regularly in the San Gabriel Valley area. If anyone comes to your door, think of your safety first and refuse whatever services they are offering. In the law of probabilities, they are more likely NOT TO BE WHO THEY SAY THEY ARE! If you have any questions about a status of someone claiming to be a city employee or utility worker who is on legitimate business, do not hesitate to call the police department for assistance.
