The recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan serve as an urgent reminder that everyone should prepare for disasters.

If you are looking for hands-on training, the Sebastopol Fire Department is offering its 14th CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) class starting May 3. CERT is intended to provide basic community emergency response training. Classes are held on 8 consecutive Tuesdays/Wednesdays, and cover important topics related to Disaster Preparedness and citizen response. Classes include fire safety/suppression, medical skills, search and rescue, personal preparedness, disaster psychology, communications and security.

The course is open to West County residents and costs $50 to cover the costs of materials. Students completing all 8 classes will receive a backpack full of safety equipment and supplies as well as a $50 gift Certificate from Sebastopol Hardware, to help you strengthen your disaster kit.
