Small plane makes emergency landing at Calabasas landfill

At about 6:18PM, Van Nuys Airport air traffic control called LAPD to report a plane preparing to make an emergency landing. Because of where the plane was heading, LAPD called the Lost Hills/Malibu Sheriff’s Station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Minutes later, Lost Hills/Malibu Sheriff’s Station deputies received a 9-1-1 call from the pilot saying that he had made an emergency landing. Deputies began searching for the downed plane, pilot and his one passenger, and found them at about 6:50PM near a trail at the Calabasas landfill on the 5300 block of 5300 block of Lost Hills Road.

The plane was apparently on a training flight. The two people on board included a 27-year old Korean-American flight instructor from Irvine and a 20-year White male from Westwood. Both reportedly received minor injuries.

The plane is a 2001 Piper Cherokee, 4-seater, which was damaged.

Sheriff’s Aero Bureau pilots are on scene and investigating. The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration will investigate and make a determination as to the cause of this emergency landing. Preliminarily, it is possible that it was due to some type of engine failure.

The flight took off from Santa Monica Airport and its intended destination was to return to Santa Monica Airport.
