Somerset Police advise that thefts from unlocked vehicles are on the rise. Please take the time to lock your vehicle.

Somerset Borough Police advise that thefts from vehicles seem to be on the rise again. What is frustrating is that police have yet to receive a complaint of such a theft from the owner of a vehicle that has been locked. Thieves are obviously searching for unlocked vehicles. Police believe that if people would take the time to lock their vehicles we would see these types of thefts eliminated. Officers are adjusting their patrols in an attempt to apprehend the thieves, but that unlocked vehicles present a tempting target. Most of the time these types of thefts are committed by people looking to score quick cash or other valuables that can be quickly converted to cash to support their drug addiction. Unlocked vehicles can also create an opportunity for other, more serious crimes, such as vehicle theft and even burglary. Often times, people leave an extra key to the vehicle inside and the thief finds and uses it, turning a relatively small theft into a felony vehicle theft. Other times, the thief has used a garage door opener to gain entry into the victim’s house. Please feel free to contact the Somerset Borough Police or visit for more tips on crime prevention.
