Alcohol and Drug Abuse in the Workplace

Drug and alcohol abuse in the workplace are problems that affect everyone, not just the abuser. There's agood chance that someone, who is employed by the business or knows someone where you work abusing alcohol or drugs. It is suggested that there is a written policy and procedure available for review by all employees working at a business, which can be placed on file for further reference if needed.

No employees shall report to work under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances or other drugs which affect his/ her alertness, coordination, reaction, response, judgment, decision-making or safety.

While on company property, premises or where work is being done and/ or preformed no employee shall use, sell, possess or transfer any illegal drug or any prescription drug. These types of activities should also be prohibited during breaks and extended work hours.

Engaging in off-duty sale, purchase, transfer, use or possession of illegal drugs or controlled substances mat have a negative affect on an employee’s ability to perform his/ her work function.

Workers who abuse alcohol and drugs are far less productive, miss more workdays, and are more likely to injure themselves or someone else.

Don't enable a troubled co-worker to continue abusing alcohol or other drugs on the job by ignoring the problem, lying or covering up for him or her, doing his or her job, or lending money. Talk to a supervisor or supply the team(s) with another outlet for communication.

Company leadership should notify the appropriate law enforcement agencies when there is reasonable suspicion to believe that an employee may have illegal drugs in his/ her possession on property, premises or at work.
