CARTERET — Authorities are searching for an 18-year-old Carteret man who has been charged with fatally shooting a teenager Wednesday evening on Pershing Avenue in the borough, police said.

The accused gunman, Jorge Borrero, was last seen the day of the shooting, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and Carteret Police Chief John Pieczyski said in a news release Saturday.

Borrero, who turns 19 Monday, was charged Friday with murder and possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, police said.

Borrero allegedly shot 17-year-old Malcolm Harvey on Pershing Avenue, the street where Harvey lived, about 50 yards from the borough library, police said. The victim walked toward the library before he fell to the sidewalk.

Police were alerted to the shooting by a 911 call at 5:57 p.m. Harvey was pronounced dead at 7:46 p.m. at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway.

The Middlesex County Medical Examiner's Office determined Harvey was the victim of a homicide and that he died from a gunshot wound, police said. Police described Borrero as 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing 150 pounds.

Friends and family have described Harvey, a Raritan Valley Academy student, as a loving teenager who enjoyed playing football and video games.
