On Sunday, 2-6-11, at about 7:05AM, San Mateo Police Department and Fire Department received a report of a loud explosion in the area of the 1000 Blk. of So. Amphlett Blvd. This location is primarily a business/commercial district. The explosion was loud enough to be heard within an approximate half mile radius. Police and Fire arrived within minutes and discovered an abandoned couch in front of a vacant building. It appeared an incendiary type devise similar to an M80 firecracker was placed near the piece of furniture and then ignited causing the loud explosion. There were no reported injuries. The vacant business sustained two broken windows as a result of the blast. San Mateo County Bomb Squad assisted in ensuring there were no further devices and that the scene was secured for investigators.

The area surrounding the 1000 Blk. of So. Amphlett was cordoned off for about two hours and reopened to traffic at about 9:15AM. There was minimal affect on traffic during the street closure. San Mateo Police and Fire Department are continuing the investigation.
